Garage door installation - the basics
Although we recommend getting a professional to install your garage doors, we understand that some of you would like to do it yourself. Here are the things you should do before, during, and after installing your garage door. We have gathered together some basic tips that are often forgotten and can lead to major problems during installation. If, after reading this article, you feel you are confident in fitting your garage door yourself, it is worth doing further research, as every door is different.
Before installation:
After carefully removing your existing garage door, clean the entire area. Make sure you have all the fittings and fixtures, and the necessary tools for the job. Remember that initial fixing is done from inside the garage once the door is in place, so before placing the door into the opening make sure your tools and ladder are inside. Check that there are no obstructions such as low roof beams or gas meters that could interfere with the door opening. You should also make sure that you have enough overhead clearance. Garage doors are naturally unwieldy, and are best handled by two people, particularly if the entire door is in one piece rather than sections.
During installation:
Carefully read the installation instructions that have come with your brand new door. Do this both before and during installation. The most common sequence of installation is as follows:
- attach the hardware to the door section.
- place the door in the opening (this may be in individual sections).
- install the track, and insert the rollers.
- attach the springs and connect the cables.
If you are at all unsure about any part of the installation process, call an expert. Attaching the springs in particular can be dangerous as they will be under high tension.
After installation:
All moving parts should be lightly oiled after installation. Consider sealing your garage door with anti-corrosive paint or spray. This will help to protect it from the elements and prevent rust. Check with the manufacturer or your garage door supplier to see if this is recommended for your specific door. A regular garage service will help to keep the door and mechanisms in excellent condition.
